Leasing Solar Power from Your Power Company PDF Print E-mail

I see all these experimental ideas being tested in hopes of reducing global warming. Some look promising until you see the timeline to implement them, some 20-30 years.

So what is the answer?…well it is hard to say. I think it is Solar Power. Most would say I cannot afford to spend that kind of money to offset my power needs.

Solar Power grants from the government don’t seem to be working, even getting money from the government stills requires you to have the money upfront then wait for your rebate to come in.

Currently most power companies are required to produce a percentage of their power from renewable sources. This percentage seems to be too low to even make a difference. So if the power companies need to make a portion of their power from renewables, and their consumers don’t have the upfront money to put solar panels on their roofs what if we could lease the solar panels from the power company at a lower rate than it would cost to buy them outright. This would kills 2 birds with one stone so to say.

Think about it, how many square feet of roofs are there in just your neighborhood? In my zip code alone there are over 80,000 homes. If each of those homes had a 1kW solar system on their roofs feeding the grid where the power is needed that would be 80MW of power, not taking into account the efficiency of the panels so it would be more like 56MW with a 70% efficiency rating.

So this is just one zip code…imagine an entire city. This could be the answer, wait it is the answer. This would give power companies the revenue to get away from burning coal to produce their power and eliminate the CO2 they produce.

Right now it could cost you anywhere from 7-10 dollars per watt. If the power companies could lease them to homeowners for $2/Watt, this would make it easier for the “regular Joe” to go green. It would also create more jobs. There has to be someone to maintain all these new “solar farms”. It is a win win situation.

I know some will say but solar power is only produced during the day, and guess what they are correct, so there would need to be a way to store extra power for night time use. Again maybe this is an area where the homeowners can be involved. Maybe a battery bank could be included in this lease. Spreading out the storage would lessen the initial space requirements to support the grid.

So here is the idea, now we just need enough people to start taking about it and maybe someone will hear.
